How to Correctly Shift Into Four-Wheel Drive: 4H vs 4L

Here at Charlie's Pre-Owned, we want you to be an informed truck or SUV owner. We are here to give you the scoop on how to shift in and out of four-wheel drive correctly. Do you know the difference between 4H and 4L? Let's go over both gears to give you a better understanding.

Using 4L is for higher torque and slower speeds. For that reason, you don't want to drive too fast when in this gear set. A good recommendation is to keep your speed under 35 mph when in 4L.

Always remember to stop the car and put it into park before shifting into four-wheel drive. You can use 4H or four high for driving at higher speeds and achieving good traction. Keep speeds under 55 mph to avoid drivetrain damage when using FWD. Visit us in Augusta and we'll be happy to answer any other questions you may have.
