Motor Oil: Myths Masquerading as Fact

Your car needs it, so you faithfully follow whatever motor oil rules you've heard. The problem is, you could be following a myth.

Avoiding synthetic oil because it causes leaks is a myth. That used to be true back in the 1970s, but for most autos, there is no leak problem to worry about. However, older vehicles might have leaks, but that's because the oil could reveal seal cracks that are already there. Don't beat yourself up if you've let your car go past that 3,000-mile oil change. Truthfully, you may be getting oil changes too often. Some vehicles need it at 3,000 miles, while others need it at 4,000 or even higher mileage. Check the owner's manual to see what your car needs.
